Appointments during an election is illegal-CMEV

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Election monitoring bodies say if the government grants the Rs.20,000 monthly allowance to graduates part of the jobs programme, despite an order by the Election Commission to halt the programme, the move can be challenged before Court.

National Coordinator of the Centre for Monitoring Election Violence Manjula Gajanayake said allowances and appointments during an election period is illegal.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle, Mr. Gajanayake responded to a claim by Co-Cabinet Spokesman Minister Bandula Gunawardena that the allowances will be deposited to bank accounts of graduates despite the temporary ban on training of graduates.

He said even if such a decision is reached, he believes it can be challenged before a Court of Law.

Gajanayake noted that the whole process has become a muddle, adding that various statements will make matetrs worse.

He added that even though the President has intended it in the right manner, Ministers commenting on the matter is only focused on their political benefit.

At such a time Gajanayake noted that it is regretful that Ministers try to make the most of such a situation.
