Two woman nabbed at BIA with foreign cigarette haul

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Two passengers including an Indian national have been apprehended at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake for smuggling in a stock of foreign-manufactured cigarettes into the country.

According to reports the duo is a married couple from Kotahena area. The 44-year-old husband is a Sri Lankan while his wife, aged 42, is an Indian national.

They had arrived at the Katunayake Airport early this morning (29) from Dubai.

Customs officers attached to the airport had seized the contraband concealed inside the couple’s luggage.

Accordingly, a total of 48,400 cigarette sticks worth Rs. 2.42 million were taken into custody.

The couple was imposed a Rs. 200,000 fine and the contraband has been confiscated.
