3,000 road accident deaths predicted in 2020

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister of Passenger Transport Management Mahinda Amaraweera says based on a study conducted by the health sector, it has been predicted more than 3,000 deaths will occur in the country due to road accidents in 2020.

Speaking at a meeting at the National Transport Commission, Minister Mahinda Amaraweera noted that the government is expected to spend around Rs.1 billion to treat those who sustain injuries in motor vehicle related accidents.

Minister Amaraweera revealed that according to statistics, six persons succumb daily due to road accidents.

The Minister added health authorities spend between Rs.1000 and Rs.10 million to treat individuals with accident related injuries.

Accordingly, the present government will make it a priority to reduce the number of road accidents that occur within the country.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has reportedly presented a number of suggestions to support the measure.
