(UTV | COLOMBO) – The Meteorology Department issued warning of extreme heat prevalent in some parts of the country.
Forecast Department Deputy Director, Merille Mendis said temperature had increased to an index the public will feel discomfort and is expected raise severely in the coming days in some parts of the North-Western and Western Provinces and in Mannar, Galle and Matara Districts. “Temperature had increased to 39 C, and due to this an extreme caution was issued. The public were warned of possible heat cramps, exhaustion and even heat stroke. Especially in the districts mentioned above”.
According to the Meteorology Department, the Heat Index Forecast is calculated by using relative humidity and maximum temperature and this is the condition that is felt on the human body.
The public are advised to stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade as often as possible while at work, check up on the elderly and the sick while indoors, never leave children unattended in vehicles, limit strenuous outdoor activities. He further added, even though some parts of the country is experiencing mild rain, still proper showers are expected in mid-March.
