Thigambaram condemns Shavendra Silva ban

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Parliamentarian Palany Thigambaram has denounced the US State Department’s decision to impose a travel ban on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva.

Speaking during an event in Ginigathhena, MP Thigambaram said the Army Commander rendered a yeoman service to the country during the 30-year conflict with the LTTE and therefore all factions should stand by him.

He said it is unreasonable to impose restrictions on the Commander who leads the country’s Army.

The United States last week, imposed sanctions on Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, for alleged human rights violations committed in 2009 during the conflict with the LTTE.

Last week, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in a statement said the allegations of human rights violations against Lieutenant General Shavendra Silva, documented by the United Nations and other organizations, are serious and credible.
