Uphold the independence of the judiciary -PM Rajapkse

(UTV|COLOMBO) –  Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa says it is the responsibility of all stakeholders to uphold the independence of the judiciary.

Prime Minister Rajapaksa said as a government they will also take necessary steps to ensure the independence of the judiciary in the country.

Speaking to Heads of Media institutions at Temple Trees today, Premier Rajapaksa said he believes the Chief Justice will take appropriate steps to address the fallout within the judiciary following the revelation of controversial phone recordings belonging to Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake.

During the meeting the Prime Minister also lamented the inability of the government to provide concessions to the masses as financial restrictions have been imposed through the recently approved Vote on Account in Parliament.

Premier Mahinda Rajapaksa claimed that the expenses of the government have been restricted until April this year, following the approval of the Vote on Account.

The Prime Minister added through the presentation of a future budget, all factions will be provided with additional concessions.

Commenting on the forthcoming election, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa said he is confident that his faction will be able to obtain a two thirds majority in Parliament after the conduct of the polls.
