Grace period to surrender illegal firearms amended

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The government has amended the time frame for the previously announced grace period to hand over illegal firearms held without valid permits or documents.

Accordingly, the public is advised to hand over illegal firearms to the nearest Police station during the amnesty period.

Military Spokesman Brigadier Chandana Wickramasinghe said all illegal firearms held without valid permits or documents can be handed over to Police stations, between the 12th and 15th of February.

The Military Spokesman however warned the Army will take stern action against those found in possession of or using illegal firearms, once the grace period ends.

The Defence Ministry has also requested the public to provide information on anyone keeping illegal firearms in their possession after the amnesty ends
