‘Micro scale plastics are in the atmosphere’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Director of the Postgraduate Institute of Science of the University of Peradeniya Professor GA Pitawala says plastic particles that are not visible to the naked eye are prevalent in the atmosphere.

Speaking at a media briefing in Kandy yesterday the Professor said the existence of plastic particles in the atmosphere could lead to be harmful to one’s health.

He said they carried out investigations recently and found micro scale plastics, that are not visible under a microscope either.

The Professor noted that they speak of asbestos being harmful, adding micro scale plastics will be much worse.

Professor GA Pitawala also stated that air pollution is high in Kandy in comparison to Colombo.

He said air pollution is high in many cities and rued that sufficient inspections have not been carried out.

He claimed that vehicles especially, emit carbonic elements to the environment, which is harmful to one’s health.
