Final decision on semi-luxury buses in a week

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister of Passenger Transport Management Mahinda Amaraweera has granted a week to reach a final decision on the continuation of the semi-luxury bus service.

Speaking at a discussion with semi-luxury bus operators the Minister informed bus operators to present acceptable facts that support the continuation of the service to the National Transport Commission.

A survey conducted by the National Transport Commission with a sample of 10,000 passengers revealed that the semi-luxury bus service does not benefit the public.

68% of the passengers stated that there was no necessity for the service any longer while 8% stated that they were unaware the bus was semi-luxury.

The government reached a decision to discontinue the semi-luxury bus service due to the failure of bus operators to provide necessary facilities and for accepting more passengers than what the buses can accommodate.
