‘Colombo to be free of shanties by 2024’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says Colombo will become the only city in South Asia free of shanties by the year 2024.

The Minister made this declaration while speaking at an event to hand over 3,300 housing units to the public at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday.

The Minister stressed the government has taken on the responsibility of developing the Colombo city from ground level up.

He explained the government has commenced projects that will develop and rebuild the city of Colombo from 20m underground to 100m above ground.

He further noted water supply lines and drainage line systems which are over 150 years old are currently under renovation, adding Colombo will also be made a city which can effectively address flooding through the development of tunnels and pumping systems.

Minister Ranawaka further claimed that several more low income, high rise housing projects will be constructed as well, in a bid to eliminate the need for shanties from the city and provide low income earners stable residencies.
