(UTV|COLOMBO) – Further hearing on the case filed against former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Vaas Gunawardena over an assault incident has been fixed for December 17 by the Colombo High Court.

The Attorney General had filed a case against the suspects over their alleged involvement in the assault of a student of the Malabe technology institute, in 2009.

High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran announced that the case would be heard after witness accounts are recorded based on the telephone conversations put forward by the prosecution as evidence.

Former DIG Vaas Gunawardena’s wife, son, and six officers of the Colombo Crimes Division have also been named among the accused.

The Attorney General has filed charges against the suspects under two counts over the incident believed to have taken place between August 8 and 21 in 2009.

Gunawardena is already serving a life imprisonment term after being convicted in the murder of businessman Mohamed Shiyam.
