Muslim World League makes USD 5 million donation for Easter victims

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A delegation led by Muslim World League (MWL) Secretary-General and International Union of Intellectuals President Dr. Mohammad Bin Abdulakarim Alissa met Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe at Temple Trees yesterday (31).

The discussions held between them paid special attention towards promoting religious harmony and reconciliation in Sri Lanka.

The Prime Minister told the Secretary General that following the Easter Sunday attacks, he took steps to arrest the terrorists involved in the attacks by having discussions with Security Forces to restore normalcy to the country.

Dr. Alissa stated that he is dedicated to forging peace, harmony and co-existence among communities, and he regretted the series of bomb attacks which took place in the country on 21 April.

He also thanked the Prime Minister for acting fast to bring back the country to normalcy immediately after the attacks, the Prime Minister’s Media Unit stated.

The Secretary-General stressed that he had occasion to hold a series of discussions with members of the Maha Sangha during his visit and those discussions reaffirmed the essential values of Buddhism as a religion which spreads love and compassion throughout the world.

The Secretary-General assured that he would make a donation of USD 5 million towards the fund to assist people affected by the Easter Sunday attacks.

The Prime Minister thanked the Secretary-General for visiting Sri Lanka to look into the welfare of people affected by Easter Sunday attacks and extend assistance to them.

Postal Services and Muslim Religious Affairs Minister M. H. A. Haleem and Western Province Governor A. J. M. Muzzamil were also present on the occasion.
