Dr. Shafi granted bail [UPDATE]

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohammed Shafi granted bail by the Kurunegala Magistrate’s Court this evening (25).

He was released on a cash bail of Rs.250,000 and 4 sureties of Rs.2.5 million each.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) on Wednesday (24) informed the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) investigating the Easter Sunday attacks that there is no evidence to back the allegations against Dr. Shafi.

Director of CID, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Shani Abeysekera informed the PSC that there is no evidence to prove that Dr. Shafi performed illegal sterilisation surgeries or has links to terrorist activities.

The CID had recorded statements from Doctors and Nurses who assisted Dr. Shafi during caesarean surgeries he had carried out, and none of them claimed that the Doctor in question had done any illegal activity during the surgeries.

The CID has already informed Court in this regard, Abeysekera informed the PSC.

Dr. Shafi was initially arrested over allegedly accumulating assets via illegal means.
