Fourteen vessels redirected to Minicoy Island for safety

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Department of Fisheries says 14 Multi-Day fishing trawlers have been redirected to the Minicoy Island in Indian waters, due to the prevailing bad weather.

Speaking to a prominent online news portal in the isle, Assistant Director of the Department Padmapriya Tissera said the government of India allowed the Lankan fishing trawlers to temporarily proceed to the island and dock there, as it is a safe zone, following a request made by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

He said the Sri Lanka Navy and the Ministry of Fisheries has also taken the necessary steps in this regard to ensure the safety of the vessels.

Meanwhile Assistant Director Tissera also noted other daily finishing vessels, have been ordered to refrain from going out to sea in several areas of the island until further notice.
