Anjalika bags women’s singles crown

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Anjalika Kurera of Ave Maria Convent, Negombo won the women’s singles crown beating Rukshika Wijesuriya 6/2, 6/2 in the final of the 104th Colombo Championship tennis tournament continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association clay courts yesterday.

Anjalika has been the favourite for the title and proved her supremacy by beating Rukshika in easy straight sets in the final.

The tournament has been hindered by the inclement weather and the women’s singles final was postponed from July 13. Anjalika was in fine form through out the tournament and qualified for the singles final by beating seasoned campaigner Anika Seneviratne in semis 6/2, 6/4. Rukshika cleared her semifinal hurdle defeating Janali Manamperi 6/3, 7/6.

Meanwhile the men’s singles final between Dineshkanthan Thangaraja and Sharmal Dissanayaka will be played today at the SLTA clay courts.

Dineshkanthan beat Chathurya Nilaweera 6/1, 6/1 while Sharmal defeated Liu-Hui-Retalli 6/2, 6/1 in semifinal battles.

The tournament commenced on July 5 and scheduled to be concluded on July 21 but it will most probably drag on until July 24 as bad weather affected the tourney. (DN)
