(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Ministry of Home Affairs has decided to issue National Identity Cards under the one-day service programme, through all its regional offices.

Minister of Internal and Home Affairs Vajira Abeywardena speaking during an event in Hatton said the service will be extended to the public, at all offices of the Department of Registration of Persons.

The issuance of NICs under the one-day service at present is only available at the head office of the Department of Registration of Persons in Battaramulla.

The Minister said the Central Province Branch of the Department will be declared open in Nuwara-Eliya today.

A total of Rs.154.4 million was allocated for the construction of the new branch.

Residents of Nuwara-Eliya had faced numerous obstacles when obtaining new NICs and according to the Minister the opening of the new branch will mitigate such concerns.

Subsequent to the opening of the Nuwara-Eliya branch, the issuance of NICs under the One-Day service programme will also be expanded.
