Kingswood, Vidyartha, St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja promoted to division one

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The 2019 rugby inter-school league season has come to an end. Although the Kandy schools did not fare well overall, many players were outstanding. Kandy schools gave of their best promoting the game of rugby as well as improving the standard of play. The Kandy schools who took part in the tournament were Trinity, St. Anthony’s, Kingswood, Dharmaraja, Vidyartha, St. Sylvester’s, Wariyapola Sri Sumangala and Sri Rahula.

Kingswood were crowned ‘Plate’ champions. Next season, 12 schools will be in the Division 1 Segment ‘A’ Schools League; out of which five are from Kandy and rest from Colombo. The Kandy schools are Trinity, Kingswood, Vidyartha, St. Anthony’s and Dharmaraja. St. Sylvester’s, Sri Sumangala College and Sri Rahula College will be in the lower division

Cup

Trinity College were placed seventh in the Cup competition. They played nine games, won four and lost five. This time Trinity had eight of last year’s players in their ranks. They are yet to win the league since 1987. At one time Trinity was known as the cradle of schools rugby.

Plate

Kingswood College clinched the Plate after winning their last outing against St. Anthony’s College. They have won the league title in 2004/5 and 2008. They played five games and won all five.

St. Anthony’s were placed second in the Plate and back in the ‘A’ division. They played five games, won three and lost two.

Vidyartha College were placed fourth in the Plate competition. Out for the five games, they won three lost one and drew one. They beat D.S. Senanayake College at Havelock Park 29-21 to secure promotion to ‘A’ division.

Wariyapola Sri Sumangala (St. Paul’s) in the four games of the Plate competition have won two and lost two. Today rugby is one of the major sports at Kandy’s Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College which was founded under the name of St. Paul’s College. With limited facilities they keep the sports flag flying.

Bowl

St. Sylvester’s played in the ‘Bowl’ and were able to win only two games out of four.

Shield

Sri Rahula played in the Shield competition and won their four games. (DN)
