Death penalty is not the answer – Patali Champika

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says the death penalty will not resolve prevailing issues.

Speaking at a function the Minister said prior to imposing the death penalty, steps should be taken to fast track the hearing of cases.

He stressed taking a life is not something that can be reversed.

The Minister noted on one side it takes years, sometimes seventeen years to hear a case and justice is not served.

Therefore he noted that before imposing the death penalty the country must have an efficient judicial system.

He stated Sri Lanka requires a system where a case can be completed within three years, adding however that the issue cannot be solved through the death penalty.
