Samurdhi increased to reduce poverty

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Minister Akila Viraj Kariyawasam says the present administration has increased the Samurdhi benefit substantially in an attempt to alleviate poverty in the country.

Speaking during an event in Kuliyapitiya, Minister Kariyawasam pledged to increase state allocation to uplift the livelihoods of the rural folks.

The Minister noted when the government was formed in 2015, only Rs. 14,000 million had been allocated for the Samurdhi benefit but the present government had increased the amount to Rs. 45,000 million after it came in to power.

Minister Kariyawasam added the Samurdhi benefit and other benefits had been increased by 200% to 300%.
