Laxman Pathiraja released on Presidential Pardon

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Former Chairman of the Warakapola Pradeshiya Sabha Laxman Pathiraja who was handed an 18-year prison term to be served in six years on bribery charges, has been released on Presidential Pardon.

The release order was issued by Colombo High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran.

Laxman Pathiraja was sentenced to rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty of obtaining a bribe of 25,000 rupees to award contracts for the construction of three roads in Warakapola.

The verdict in the case was issued on the 29th of October 2009.

The verdict was upheld by the Court of Appeal following an appeal filed by the former Warakapola PS chairman Laxman Pathiraja.
