Govt’s must ensure peace – Religious Leaders

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Religious leaders say it is the responsibility of the government to ensure sustainable peace and ban extremist groups in the country.

The religious leaders requested the government to refrain from entering agreements that are both harmful to the country and can also create unrest and lead to instability.

A special discussion between the Maha Sanga and Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith was held last evening at the Asigiri Maha Viharaya in Kandy.

Following the discussion Venerable Anamaduwe Dhammadasa thera read out a joint statement released by the religious leaders.

The statement expressed the religious leaders were strongly opposed to entering agreements which enabled countries or the military force of any country to enter Sri Lanka and pitch camps and allowed foreigners to use Sri Lanka as they wished, and pose a threat to the people’s supremacy and sovereignty laid out in the Sri Lankan Constitution.

The statement noted  Governments responsibility considering the present situation in is to to avoid entering such agreements which plunge the country into instability and to ban all extremist groups while establishing common law, in order to ensure peace within the country.

The statement also noted the Public’s opinion should be taken into consideration when entering agreements with foreign nations or institutions which affect the country’s independence.
