Anika retains singles crown and performs a ‘double’

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Anika Seneviratne defended her National singles tennis title (clay) in style by defeating top seed Janali Manamperi 6/0, 6/3 in the final played at the SLTA courts yesterday.

Anika then teamed up with her sister Alana and powered to a 6/0, 6/4 victory over bottom seeds Janali Manamperi and Savini Jayasuriya to take the doubles title.

The sisters who were the top seeds have now achieved a ‘grand slam’ by winning all three Super A titles on offer – the Colombo Championships, Nationals (Hard Court) and Nationals (Clay) and also the A grade SSC tournaments respectively.

Anika has also regained her number one singles ranking which was briefly disrupted by the Nationals (clay) being shifted from February to May this year.

The Women’s Federation Cup is to take place in Tajikistan from the June 12-16 and hopefully the sisters will be part of the national team. (DN)
