Cyclonic storm to move away from Sri Lanka, yet stormy waters to continue

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Department of Meteorology on Friday (03) requested the public, Naval and fishing communities to be vigilant as the cyclonic storm ‘FANI’ (Pronounced as FONI) located about 880 kilometres North-East of Jaffna, is likely to move North – North-East-wards while moving away from the island, hence the affect from this system will gradually reduce.

Therefore, the strong winds up to 60 kilometres per hour can be expected over the island, particularly in Central hilly areas, Northern, North-Central, North-Western and Southern Provinces, and in Trincomalee District.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times over Sabaragamuwa, Central, Southern, Western, and North-Western Provinces, while heavy falls about 100 millimetres can be expected at some places in the above areas, the Met. Department stressed, adding that the showers or thundershowers may occur at several places after 2.00 PM in Easter and Uva Provinces, and in Polonnaruwa District.
