Will ensure peace & freedom as Head of State – MS

(UTV|COLOMBO) – President Maithripala Sirisena says he will take on the responsibility of establishing a peaceful and free environment in the country, as the Head of State.

Speaking at the All Religious Committee at the Presidential Secretariat last evening the President said the support of all parties has been extended to eliminate terrorism.

President Sirisena said he has placed his confidence in the country’s security forces claiming he will not require foreign forces.

The President expressed his firm belief that all religious leaders will commit to the task of building peace and reconciliation among the people.

The President also commended the peaceful approach taken by Catholic priests, including the Archbishop of Colombo Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith and the catholic community.

The Maha Sangha and all other religious leaders, presented their suggestions on steps that should be taken to contain the present situation.

Cardinal Ranjith expressing his views said the attacks were not carried out by the Muslim community claiming measures should be taken promptly against those responsible for the terror attacks.

Expressing his views the Anunayake of the Malwathu Chapter Ven. Dimbulkubure Wimaladhamma Thera said religious schools that teach students that ethnic divisions should be abolished, adding with divisions there will be no unity.

Meanwhile the President of the All Ceylon Jamiyyathul Ulama Shaikh Mauliwi Rizwe reiterated that they had provided information regarding the activities of the terrorist organization to a former Defence Secretary in 2014.

President Sirisena said all views and suggestions will be taken into consideration when working towards eradicating terrorism.
