170 held for driving under the influence

(UTV|COLOMBO) – A total of 170 motorists have been apprehended for driving under the influence during the past 24-hours that ended at 6am.

The Police Media Unit said 6,651 cases have been filed against motorists over various traffic violations during a special operation carried out from 6am yesterday to 6 this morning.

Police said a total of 941 drunk drivers have been arrested during island-wide operations since the 11th of April. A total of 29,461 cases have been filed against motorists over traffic violations.

Police launched a security and traffic operation on the 11th of April while it is expected to be worked-off until the 22nd of April.

The Police Headquarters has also deployed 8,000 officers on traffic duty during the festive season.
