Minister Bathiudeen commends China’s support for schoolchildren in Mannar

(UTV|COLOMBO) – China assures its support presently and in future – for the deserving and underprivileged school children of Mannar. “We will try our best to help the children living here,” assured the Chinese Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Cheng Xueyuan on Wednesday (06) in Tharapuram, Mannar.

Ambassador Xueyuan, joined by Officials of Chinese Embassy, was addressing the school accessories distribution ceremony for underprivileged and deserving school children in Mannar organised by Minister of Industry Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, and Cooperative Development Rishad Bathiudeen and held at Almeena School, Tharapuram yesterday. The event saw more than 300 deserving school children in Mannar area receiving various school accessories, gifted by the Chinese Embassy in Colombo.

“When I see the smiles on your faces, I can see a bright future for Sri Lanka,” said Ambassador Xueyuan, adding that “The essence of exchanges between China and Sri Lanka is on the basis that it is an exchange between the peoples of both countries. Promoting communication and exchanges between children of both countries, in turn, promotes China – Sri Lanka cooperation. I feel honoured to donate small gifts to these children today and hope to further enhance exchanges between the Chinese side and these children. We will try our best to help the children living here. This distribution event further promotes friendship between both China and Sri Lanka.”

Minister Bathiudeen thanked Ambassador Xueyuan and people of China for the donations.

“China – Sri Lanka relations were very strong going back to the times of kingdoms. Sri Lanka established diplomatic relations in February 1957. Thereafter relations between our counties were further strengthened. China now helps us in development of major ports, airports, roads and railways – and in many other ways – such as today’s donations. Today is an important day for students of Mannar. With the support of people of China, we are distributing school accessories for more than 300 underprivileged and deserving students here. On behalf of the students, teachers and parents I extend my highest appreciation to Your Excellency Ambassador Xueyuan and the people of China. I specially thank Excellency Ambassador Xueyuan for his promise to support these students in future as well,” said Minister Bathiudeen.

Both Minister Bathiudeen and Ambassador Xueyuan also discussed other aspects of Sri Lanka – China cooperation yesterday.
