Premier, Minister Bathiudeen assess relief efforts in flood-hit North

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The Minister of Industry and Commerce, Resettlement of Protracted Displaced Persons, and Cooperative Development Rishad Bathiudeen together with Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe is visiting Kilinochchi to review relief efforts in the region, following the inclement weather that has displaced thousands in flood-hit Northern Province.

The Minister of Public Administration and Disaster Management Ranjith Madduma Bandara, and the Minister of Labour, Trade Union Relations, and Social Empowerment Daya Gamage also participated.

According to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), continual torrential rains caused by low air pressure since 21 December have led to flooding in the North Province.

As of 26 December, two deaths have been confirmed, 8,683 people from 2,680 households have been forced to evacuate, and a total of 87,693 people from 27,879 households have been affected by this disaster.

The worst-affected districts were Mullaitivu, Killinochchi, Mannar, Vavuniya, and Jaffna.

Military and the Police were involved in rescue operations while the Lanka Sathosa network, under the direction of Minister Bathiudeen commenced relief work in flood-hit Northern Province.
