“A historic victory for Sri Lanka,” ACMC praises judiciary for upholding democracy

(UTV|COLOMBO) – The All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) Thursday (13) hailed the ruling of the Supreme Court that the dissolution of Parliament by President Maithripala Sirisena was unconstitutional and illegal.

“ACMC praises Sri Lanka judiciary for upholding our democracy today,” the Leader of ACMC, Parliamentarian Rishad Bathiudeen tweeted stating, “A historic victory for Sri Lanka.”

Delivering the ruling this evening, a seven Judge Bench stressed that President Sirisena cannot dissolve Parliament till it completes its full 4 ½-year term.

The Judge Bench comprised with the Chief Justice Nalin Perera, and Justices Buwaneka Aluwihare, Sisira J. de Abrew, Priyantha Jayawardena, Prasanna S. Jayawardena, Vijith K. Malalgoda, and Murdu Fernando.

The verdict was announced unanimously.

The Supreme Court further noted that if the President wants to dissolve Parliament early he must have 2/3rd majority support for the move in Parliament.
