VIP Assassination Plot: Nalaka de Silva placed under special protection

(UTV|COLOMBO) – Former Head of the Terrorism Investigations Department (TID), Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Nalaka de Silva who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the alleged assassination plot on President Maithripala Sirisena and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa, have been placed under special protection in remand custody.

Considering the seriousness of charges, De Silva has detained in a special cell at the Welikada Prison and additional Security Personnel from the Prison have also been deployed for his security, Prisons Department Official quoted by local media reports.

The CID arrested De Silva last Thursday (25) and remanded till 07 November.

The CID is currently investigating the allegations made by the Operational Director of the Anti-Corruption Movement Namal Kumara that De Silva had been allegedly conspiring to assassinate President Sirisena and Gotabaya Rajapaksa by using underworld criminal ‘Makadure Madush’ who is absconding Court at the moment.

DIG Nalaka de Silva was sent on compulsory leave and later interdicted by the National Police Commission (NPC) following a recommendation forwarded by the Ministry of Law and Order, while a separate inquiry is in progress over the automatic firearms of the Division that had gone missing.
