Team India to rest top players for more games

(UTV|COLOMBO) – With the 2019 World Cup nine months away, the Indian Team Management has drawn a rotation plan to keep the players fresh. Keeping in view the fitness and form of the players, Team India is keen to reduce their workload.

Star players like Indian Captain Virat Kohli could miss out on a few more One Day International (ODI) matches in the coming months. The decision to rest Kohli for the Asia Cup has drawn criticism from several quarters. The Indian Captain had also skipped the Nidahas Trophy and the inaugural Test against Afghanistan.

Not only Kohli, the Team Management and the Selectors are working in tandem to rest more cricketers. Jasprit Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar have been missing in action from the on-going Test series against the West Indies.

With India scheduled to play a bulk of international games in Australia, New Zealand and again at home against Australia and Zimbabwe before the Indian Premier League (IPL) next year, the players face a huge task of keeping themselves fit. It also means that the likes of Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar will go to Australia for the Test series after playing in the ODIs or in the Twenty20 (T20) series against West Indies.

It is also understood that the Team Management and the Selectors are already in discussion as to who should be resting for which series.

Sources said that the Team Management would again meet in the course of the West Indies series to chalk out the plan for the future matches.

“Virat could be rested again if need be to ensure he is fit for the World Cup. It is a rotation policy which the team has initiated to keep the best combination for the World Cup in June 2019,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source told the Times of India on Sunday (07).
